The regular season opener for the Washington Demon girls’ basketball team is tonight. The Demons open the regular season at home, hosting the Eddyville-Blakesburg Rockets in a non-conference tilt.

The two teams met in last year’s season opener with the Demons edging the Rockets, 53-47. Washington scored double digit points in each quarter of last season’s meeting. Senior Morgan Kimball started last year on the right foot, scoring a career-high 23 points and converted nine of her 10 free throw attempts in the victory.

The Rockets are coming off of a 14-win campaign a season ago, and returns last year’s leading scorer. Senior Karlie Taylor scored 335 points during her junior year, an average of 14.6 points per game. She recorded eight points, making six of her eight free throw attempts, and grabbed down 12 rebounds against Washington last season.

For a second straight season, the Demon girls’ basketball team will be under the direction of a new head coach. Jordan Bentley was hired this spring to take over the head coaching duties for Jay Zieglowsky. Zieglowsky went 6-16 in his lone season as the Demons’ head coach. He resigned from his teaching and coaching positions at the end of last school year, and moved to Michigan to be closer to his new wife.

Tonight’s varsity season opener between the Washington Demons and Eddyville-Blakesburg Rockets is scheduled to begin at 7:45 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage from Washington High School begins with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 7 p.m. on KCII and KCIIRadio.com.
