Many drivers in Washington County have struck deer as of late. From Friday to Sunday 10 deer related car accidents were reported in Washington County. One accident on Highway 218 Saturday had injuries reported. At 9:16 p.m. Saturday, the caller reported hitting a deer near 192nd Street and the airbags of the vehicle deploying. Ainsworth QRS and Fire Department, Washington Rescue and Washington County Ambulance were initially paged to the scene but disregarded. The vehicle was towed from the scene and a deer tag was issued to Justin Aubrecht of Washington.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, October and November are the peak months for deer accidents and advise drivers to look for animals especially at sunrise and sunset. Deer travel in groups, so look for more if one is seen.

Also, if there is an animal in the road slow down and be prepared to stop, do not swerve sharply as the driver has a lower chance of serious injury hitting the animal than swerving into other lanes of traffic or rolling a vehicle in a ditch.
