City officials in Wayland will be checking the sewer system in the community for defects Thursday and Friday.

This will be done by placing smoke in the sewer system. The smoke will help engineers find leaks which could be allowing excessive water to get into the system.

Residents need to be aware they could find smoke in their house when this happens. If smoke does appear in your home, that means there is a defect in your plumbing system. City officials stress the smoke is non-toxic and won’t stain, it also doesn’t smell like smoke from a fire. Any residents who get smoke in their home, just need to open windows and doors and turn on exhaust fans and the smoke should go away. If you get smoke in your house but there is not a fire smoke smell, then you are asked to call Wayland City Hall at 319-256-3276 to help engineers better locate possible leaks.

A reminder the sewer smoking in Wayland will be Thursday and Friday, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
