In an effort to get more young people involved in the caucus process, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate organized youth caucuses held across the state yesterday.

One of the locations was at Sigourney High School. where students learned about the presidential candidates, participated in mock caucuses for both parties and cast votes for the candidate of their choice. Statewide vote totals show Bernie Sanders the choice among the Democrats with 52% of the vote, followed by Martin O’Malley at 24% and Hillary Clinton with 14%. Among Republicans the top candidates were Ben Carson with 22% of the vote, followed by Donald Trump with 15% and both Marco Rubio and Rand Paul at 14%.

More than 1,600 students were registered for the events that were held statewide. The Iowa Youth Caucus is connected to the Caucus 101 curriculum developed by Pate for Iowa high school students.
