The head coach of the Washington Demon football team has been selected to coach in this year’s annual senior all-star game. Garrison Carter took over the Washington Demon football program in the summer of 2014 and was instrumental in transitioning the team’s offensive identity from a power running game to a balanced spread look. The Demons averaged scoring nearly 34 points per game (33.9) in the two season’s under Carter, including scoring 35 points or more points 11 different times.

Washington’s offensive fire power  played a role in Carter receiving a call to be a part of this year’s Shine Bowl coaching staff. “I got a phone call about halfway through the season from the coach at A.D.M. (Adel-DeSoto-Minburn), and had a voicemail to call him back.” Carter said, “I thought he was just wanting to exchange some film or something so I called him back. He (Mike Whisner) was selected as the head coach of the South team and asked if I would serve on his offensive staff for him.”

Since the initial phone call, Carter’s role has expanded to offensive coordinator. He is even helping coach Mike Whisner select athletes for the squad. Carter says he is making sure Washington will be represented on this year’s team. “One thing important to me is that I take care of our town and get a kid represented in the game.” Carter said, “I think its also important to get kids from surrounding areas that aren’t from (Washington’s) class but are from our county. I think this is a talented area of football and there are kids that can play in this game.”

The football game has also been an effective tool in raising money for The Shriner’s Hospital For Children. To date, the Iowa Shrine Bowl has raised over $2,268,000 for The Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.  Funds for The Shriner’s Hospitals For Children are developed by ticket sales, advertising in the Shrine Bowl program, merchandise sales, contributions and sponsorships.

The rosters for the North and South squads will be released next month. The 2016 Iowa Shrine All-Star Football Classic is scheduled for Saturday, July 23rd. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls. Listen to an interview with Carter about his selection to the South coaching staff tonight on the PM Sports Page, debuting at 6 p.m on KCII.
