There’s one wrestler left on the Washington Demon squad who hasn’t lost a match this season. Junior Trey Van Weelden has taken the mat 20 times during the month of December, and each time he left the ring victorious.

Trey is the son of Washington High School wrestling coach Brent Van Weelden. Coach Van Weelden says he is proud of his son’s early season accomplishments, “I am probably harder on him than I am with most kids but I have try to remove myself as his father and just be his coach ,” Van Weelden said, “He’s wrestling really well. I don’t think he has been truly tested by the best kids in the state but he has wrestled solid.”

Van Weelden’s undefeated run comes as he is adjusting to a bigger weight class. A state qualifier at 138 pounds last season, he is now competing in the 152 pound weight class.

The Demon wrestling team enter the new year undefeated in their 17 dual matches. They are scheduled to return to competition January 7, hosting the Fort Madison Bloodhounds in a Southeast Conference dual.
