One week into the regular season and already the Washington Demon wrestling team (10-0 overall) appears to be in mid-season form. Washington’s wrestlers dualed 10 opponents in the first week of competition, leaving each battle as the victor.

Five of the latest tallies in the win column came over the weekend in the Cascade Varsity Duels. Washington grappled Maquoketa (63-15), Maquoketa Valley (59-13), Bellevue (80-0), Starmount (65-8), and MFL Mar Mac (52-18), scoring 59 or more points in each battle to stay perfect on the season.

Seven wrestlers scored wins in each dual Friday, including the squad’s two seniors. Michael Ellingson recorded three wins by pin, another by major decision, and the last one by decision. Bryce Rickey won three matches by decision, another by fall, and the final by forfeit.

A trio of juniors and a pair of freshmen also achieved an unblemished Friday night on the mat. Returning state medalist Kyle Anderson posted a perfect evening, recording four pins and a decision. Trey Van Weelden, a state qualifier last season, won three of his five matches by pin, and the final two by forfeit. Austin Hazelett won two matches by major decision, one by fall, another by technical fall, and another by injury forfeit.

Despite last week being their introduction to varsity wrestling, Tristan Westphal-Edwards and Garrett Ikerd answered each challenge Friday with a winning result. Westphal-Edwards pinned three of his five opponents, and the other two victories by surrender. Ikerd also won three matches by pin, another by technical fall, and another by forfeit.

The two-time defending Southeast Conference champions open up their title defense Thursday, battling the Fairfield Trojans (2-0 overall) in the league opener for both schools. The varsity competitions begin at 6 p.m. at Washington High School. The meet will be in honor of the senior wrestlers and their parents.
