The Iowa Hawkeyes will be playing in the Rose Bowl Friday and a couple in Washington has a special tie to the Hawkeye Marching Band. Lisa Hughes has been doing the Hawkeye Marching Band’s uniform alterations for about 10 years. She repairs the uniforms and this year they got new uniforms so she had to fit them to the 250 band members.

Also, Lisa’s husband Don Hughes, the band director at the Washington High School, played trumpet in the band and had the chance to march in the Rose Bowl Parade when the Hawkeyes went in 1986. Don shared a story with KCII News, where the float in front of the band had to drop out, leaving a gap for the band to fill. The drum major couldn’t make the band march faster, so the front line of trumpets, which Don was in, proceeded to take huge steps forward over the next five miles to close it. He added the band was going so fast one drummer had to drop out due to an asthma flare up. After the band closed the gap, the band went on to play a field show at halftime of the football game.
