Moderate halftime leads grew larger in the second half in a pair of victories for the Highland Huskies basketball programs Tuesday evening. Highland High School played host to a Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader between the Huskies and the Cardinal Comets.

The girls’ game featured a pair of Highland (2-0 overall) seniors accounting for 46 points in a 79-45 victory over Cardinal. The Huskies led 34-25 at halftime. Senior Cheyann Adamson racked up four three-point baskets in the third quarter, pushing the Huskies lead to 19 and ultimately Highland won the game, 79-45. Adamson and Brianna Davis each recorded 23 points in the victory, improving the Huskies to 2-0 overall this season.

The Huskies (1-0 overall) boys’ basketball team is off to a positive start after receiving a spark from their bench. Senior Tereze Lanfair came off the bleachers to score a game high 15 points as Highland opened up the regular season with a 66-47 victory. The Huskies held a 29-19 advantage at intermission. Junior Trent Lasek put together a balanced effort for Highland, scoring nine points, dishing out seven assists, grabbing down five rebounds, and swiping four steals in the victory. The win opens Highland’s boys’ basketball season at 1-0 overall.

Both basketball teams are scheduled to return to action this Friday, hosting Wapello in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North battle. The varsity doubleheader tips off at 6 p.m. from Highland High School.
