The Iowa Mennonite School boys and girls basketball teams split their Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader with visiting Wapello on Tuesday night.

. In the girls contest it was the Arrows taking a 45-27 victory. IMS was hurt by foul trouble and turnovers in the game.  Wapello forced 17 first half turnovers and finished the half on a 20-6 run, taking a 29-10 lead into the break.

In the second half, Iowa Mennonite was able to find more success in the half court offensively, but were never able to seriously threaten the Wapello lead. On the night IMS was led by Jess Bender with nine points, three rebounds and one block. With the loss IMS falls to 0-3 on the year.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader the IMS boys opened the season by beating Wapello 67-55. The Indians held a 19-13 lead after one quarter, ending the first frame on an 8-1 run. IMS answered by outscoring Wapello 19-6 in the second quarter, finishing the half with an Eli Gingerich tip in at the buzzer to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room.

The two defenses took over in the second half as the score stood at 42-36 after three quarters. In the fourth, IMS stretched their lead to 50-39 but Wapello bounced back to climb within four with two minutes left. Iowa Mennonite finished the game with a strong 9-1 run to put the contest out of reach. IMS was led by Drake Brezina with 22 points and nine rebounds on nine of 14 shooting. Eli Gingerich had 17 points, 11 assists, five steals and five rebounds on seven of 10 shooting. With the win, IMS is now 1-0 on the year. The IMS boys and girls basketball teams will both be in action Friday night when they host the WACO Warriors in Kalona.
