The first week of the regular season has kept the Keota Eagles girls and boys basketball teams busy. A three-game week ends tonight as the Eagles travel to Thornburg for a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader versus the Tri-County Thornburg Trojans.

The Eagles’ girls team (0-2 overall) is searching for their first win of the season. Keota scored 18 total points in losses to Lone Tree (36-15) and Belle Plaine (44-5) Monday and Tuesday evening. Courtney Hyman leads Keota with 11 points scored in early season play. The Trojans (0-2 overall; 0-1 SICL) are looking for their first triumph of the season as well, falling 41-34 in Tuesday’s conference opener versus English Valleys.

After losing a non-conference battle Monday evening versus Lone Tree (68-63), the Eagles’ boys basketball team (1-1 overall; 1-0 SICL) opened the conference season with a 66-63 victory over the Plainsmen. Keota held a 14-point halftime lead over Belle Plaine before hanging on for the win.

Three Eagles have scored 20 or more points this week. Jacob Wickenkamp leads the team with 29 points, scoring 19 in Tuesday’s win versus Belle Plaine. Zach Mousel has chipped in 27 points, recording 16 points versus Belle Plaines. Isaiah Hahn put up 20 points in two games, contributing 12 points in Monday’s setback to Lone Tree. Tri-County (1-1 overall; 1-0 SICL) earned their first win of the season Tuesday, upending the English Valley Bears in their conference opener, 54-44.

The varsity doubleheader is set to tip off with the girls’ game at 6 p.m. and the boys’ game will follow at Tri County High School in Thornburg.
