As weather in Southeast Iowa turns colder many anglers in the area have begun to look forward to ice fishing. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recommends carefully planning ice fishing trips. Winter weather in Iowa can change quickly, the DNR says to always dress in layers. The best time of the winter to fish is just after lakes and ponds freeze over and safe ice forms and just before thaw. However, these are also times when the ice is the least reliable. Check the ice from a dock before venturing out on to the ice. A thickness of four inches of clear blue ice or eight inches of black is recommended for an adult on the ice. When dealing with water activities having a buddy or partner is recommended. If you go out on the ice alone arrange a time for a check in with somebody.
