Pet owners are reminded to take extra care of pets during winter weather conditions. A winter storm warning had been in effect Monday for Washington County and most of eastern Iowa. Amber Talbot, director of PAWS and More animal shelter in Washington, says to make sure outdoor dog houses are well insulated; she recommends using Styrofoam. Also, long-stemmed grasses are recommended for bedding so dogs can nest in it to keep warm. Straw can be used but it needs to be replenished every three to four days as it breaks down easily. Talbot explains blankets are not advised, as they become solid when they are wet and then freeze.

Always make sure outdoor pets have access to drinking water, Talbot recommends using heated water bowls. Pet-safe ice melt is also recommended to protect animals.

In addition, she reminds people to keep stray cats in mind as they often crawl under the hoods of vehicles to get warm. Talbot recommends hitting the hood of the car before starting it to get any potential animals out.
