The first Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader of the season rendered different results for the Winfield-Mount Union basketball programs. The Wolves played host to the Pekin Panthers Tuesday evening in a pair of league showdowns.

The girls’ game turned into a one-sided affair as the Panthers ran past the Wolves (0-4 overall), 60-15. Pekin’s Maci Gambell scored a game-high 15 points, scoring all but three points in the first half. Beth Atwood chipped in 12 points for the Panthers in the victory. Hannah Buffington and Pearl Kreiger-Coble paced W-MU’s scoring with five points a piece in the setback, dropping the Wolves overall record to 0-4.

The boys’ game came down to the wire with the Wolves (1-0 overall) prevailing, 51-48. W-MU had a pair of seniors open their final basketball campaigns with double digit point totals. Garrett Baker began his senior season with a double-double, scoring a team-high 19 points and securing 18 rebounds in the opening night win. Baker also swatted away six shots for the Wolves defensively. Zach Davis added 18 points for W-MU in the win, improving the Wolves to 1-0 overall.

The Wolves’ basketball squads return to the floor tomorrow evening, hosting the Columbus Wildcats for a league doubleheader. The pair of varsity games are set to commence at 6 p.m. at Winfield-Mount Union High School.
