A new season of Washington Demon wrestling (3-0 overall) started down the right path Tuesday evening in Victor. The Demon wrestlers opened competition this winter in a quadrangular event against Iowa Valley, Benton, and Hartwick-Ladora-Victor at HLV High School. Washington came away with three dual victories, winning each team battle by at least 34 points.

Washington recorded seven pins, a major decision, a decision, and won two matches by forfeit in a 61-18 victory over Benton Community. The Demons suffered a single individual setback in their 76-4 triumph over HLV, a dual featuring four Demon wins by fall, one by major decision, and eight other victories by forfeit. Finally, Washington completed the quadrangular sweep by defeating Iowa Valley, 54-20. The meeting featured six victories by pin, two wins by decision, and another pair of triumphs by surrender.

Several wrestlers scored wins in each match for Washington. Junior Kyle Anderson, a two time state medalist, recorded three marks in the win column Tuesday night. His victories came by fall, forfeit, and 15-3 major decision. Junior Trey Van Weelden, who qualified for the state tournament last year, won two of his three matches by fall and his final bout by a 6-0 decision. Junior Austin Hazelett and freshmen Tristan Westphal-Edwards and Garrett Ikerd each recorded a pair of wins by fall, and a third by surrender.

Washington’s dual season is off to a 3-0 start. The Demon wrestlers return to the mat tonight, battling the Highland Huskies and Louisa-Muscatine Falcons in a non-conference triangular. Matches are set to start at 6 p.m. at Highland High School.
