A pivotal dual in the chase for the Southeast Conference wrestling title takes place tonight at Washington High School. The two-time defending Southeast Conference champions, the No. 13 Washington Demons (17-0), welcome the Fort Madison Bloodhounds (2-2 overall) to town for their yearly bout. This marks the first competition of the new year for both teams.

The Demons have yet to be bested in dual competition, winning their first 17 of this season. Washington’s halfway to their third straight conference title, already defeating Fairfield (68-7) and Keokuk (44-26) in grapples last month.

Nine Washington wrestlers have won at least 16 matches this season. Junior Trey Van Weelden (152) has the best record of any Demon wrestler, winning all 20 of his matches. Junior Austin Hazelett (138; 18-1) and freshmen Tristan Westphal-Edwards (160; Garrett Ikerd (106; 18-2) and Walker Ikerd (113; 18-2) each have 18 wins under their belt. Junior Kyle Anderson (132; 17-2), Washington’s only state ranked performer, has won 17 of his 19 grapples. Anderson, a two time state medalist, is ranked sixth in the Class 2A 132 pound weight division. Senior Michael Ellingson (138; 17-3) has also posted 17 wins, while junior Karlton Skuball (220; 16-2) has earned 16 victories.

Fort Madison enters tonight’s dual with two wrestlers who’ve won at least 10 duals. Senior Trenton Wellendorf has won 11 of his 12 matches at 285 pounds, while sophomore Harlan Steffensmeier was victorious 10 of his 11 bouts at 120 pounds.

Southeast Conference dual action is set to commence at 6:30 p.m. at Washington High School. Listen to tomorrow’s sports page for results from the meet.
