A road trip to the tri-states border is set for tonight as the Washington Demon basketball teams resume Southeast Conference play tonight. The Keokuk Chiefs girls’ and boys’ basketball teams welcome Washington to town for the final league meeting of the season.

The girls’ game pits the Demons (7-8 overall) against one of the top teams in Class 4A basketball. The No. 4 Chiefs (13-1 overall) enter the contest on a 12-game winning streak, and they haven’t lost to a team from Iowa all season. A factor in Keokuk’s success has been their defense, allowing their opponents to score 35.4 points a contest. Three Chiefs are averaging over eight points a game, including sophomore Michaela Davis (9.7), senior Paige Kayvan (8.7), and MaKenzie Pezley (8.4).

The Demon girls’ basketball team is coming off arguably their biggest victory of the season, edging the No. 14 Central Lee Hawks (13-4 overall) in non-conference action Tuesday in Washington. Four seniors scored 10 or more points for Washington, led by Addie Pacha with 13 points. Amber Salow chipped in 11 points, while Brynna DeLong and McKayla Miller each added 10 points. The Chiefs suffocated the Demons in their first meeting of the season, winning 48-31 in Washington last month.

The Washington boys’ basketball team (5-10 overall) is coming off their fifth win of the season Tuesday, defeating the Central Lee Hawks (4-12 overall) 71-63 in Washington. Sophomore Dalton Myers was one of four Demon players to score in double figures, posting a game-best 23 points. Thirty of the team’s 71 points came from players off the bench, including junior Mason Rich with 13 points and sophomore Jack Redlinger adding 12.

The Chiefs (6-9 overall) will try to avoid their third losing streak of the season after recording back-to-back losses to Mount Pleasant (50-43) and West Hancock, IL (52-41). Senior Joel Howren is a notable player for Keokuk, leading the Chiefs with 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

KCII Sports will have live play-by-play coverage of this Southeast Conference doubleheader, beginning with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 5:45 p.m. at Keokuk High School. The girls’ game is scheduled to tip off at 6:15 p.m. and the boys’ will follow.
