Demons Wrestlers Drop Dual to Williamsburg

The regular season dual schedule for the No. 7 Washington Demon wrestling team (29-1 overall) ended Thursday in Williamsburg. The No. 14 Raiders hosted a quadrangular against the Demons, the Oskaloosa Indians (3-15 overall), and the Keokuk Chiefs.

After winning 28 straight duals to start the year, Washington suffered their first team loss of the season to Williamsburg, 44-27. The Demons’ scoring featured two wins by fall, three by decision, and one by injury. Washington opened the dual with freshman Tristan Westphal-Edwards (160) winning a 5-1 decision over the Raiders’ Cavin Maloy. The Raiders would go onto win the next six weight classes, earning six points in five straight matches for a 33-3 advantage. Washington’s wins by pin came from senior Michael Ellingson (145; 2:38) and junior Kyle Anderson (132; 1:58).

The Demons rebounded in their dual versus the Oskaloosa Indians, winning their 29th dual of the season, 46-33. Washington’s scoring featured five wins by forfeit, one by fall, and one by major decision. The contested matched Washington won included freshman David Hora (120) pinning Oskaloosa’s Talon Munger in 3:34, and junior Trey Van Weelden (152) winning by a 12-0 major decision over Andy Bonilla.

The Demons enter into postseason competition next Saturday, wrestling at sectional tournament hosted by Mediapolis High School. First grapples are scheduled for 12 p.m.
