Free throw shooting loomed large in a battle of two KCII area boys’ basketball teams Saturday in rural Kalona. As heard on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIRadio.com, the Iowa Mennonite School welcomed the Sigourney Savages to Hillcrest Union for a non-conference battle.

Sigourney sent Iowa Mennonite to the free throw line 23 times, and IMS made 18 points from the charity stripe in a 56-48 victory. The game featured nine lead changes and was tied twice.

IMS senior Eli Gingerich had 20 of his game-high 26 points come in the first half, and was 12 of 13 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Cole Ours added nine off the bench for IMS. The win improves Iowa Mennonite School to 10-8 overall, and will be back at Hillcrest Union Tuesday to host the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves (12-6 overall).

Sigourney senior Blane Gretter led the Savages with 19 points, 14 coming in the first half. The Savages went to the free throw line 14 times, making eight of their attempts. The loss drops Sigourney to 8-11 overall. The Savages will return to South Iowa Cedar League play Tuesday, hosting the Tri County Trojans.
