Winning streaks were extended Tuesday night for the Highland Huskies basketball teams in Wayland. The Huskies girls’ and boys’ basketball teams traveled to Bob Hilmer Court to battle the WACO Warriors in league play.

The starting backcourt of the Huskies girls’ basketball team (9-1 overall) played a large role in their 54-31 victory over WACO (5-6 overall). Senior Cheyanne Adamson and junior Kelsey Hora combined to score 31 points in the win. WACO junior Hallie Kissell scored eight points in the setback. The victory pushes Highland’s winning streak to five games, improving to 9-1 overall. The setback drops WACO’s overall record to 5-6.

Guard play was also a large as the Highland Huskies boys’ basketball team (8-1 overall) edged WACO (2-7 overall) in a defensive battle, 46-42. Junior guard Trent Lasek chipped in a game-best 26 points. WACO junior guard Jackson Roth countered with 18 points. The win is the seventh in a row for Highland, who improved to 8-1. The loss was the fifth straight for WACO, dropping the Warriors to 2-8 overall.

Highland’s basketball teams will put their winning streaks on the line Friday in Winfield, battling the W-MU Wolves in a pair of Southeast Iowa Super Conference North contests. The varsity girls’ basketball game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow.
