The junior point guard for the Lone Tree Lion boys’ basketball team (11-2 overall) has dished out more assists than anyone inside the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North this season. Jovonte Squires has recorded 107 assists in 13 games, an average of 8.2 dimes a contest.

Squires was named KCII’s Hedge Above Lawncare Athlete of the Week on December 9, and told KCII Sports about his desire to be the school’s all-time assist leader. Heading into tomorrow’s conference action, Squires sits with 355 career assists.

Jeff Spears, a 1999 Lone Tree graduate, is the man Squires is chasing. Spears distributed the basketball 495 times during his Lion basketball career, including a state record 297 assists during his senior season. He also holds Lone Tree’s single game assist record, dishing out 18 versus Mediapolis during his junior campaign.

The Lions welcome the WACO Warriors (2-12 overall) to Lone Tree for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North clash tomorrow evening. The varsity doubleheader tips off with the girls’ game at 6 p.m. and the boys’ to follow.
