March 1st is the deadline for open enrollment for next fall. Looking at open enrollment in Washington Community Schools, superintendent Jeff Dicks says it is something Washington has had a deficit in with approximately 150 going out of the district and between 80 and 90 entering the district. He said this is something he’s worked on in previous districts and something they look to improve upon here. The superintendent adds they’ve been working on their social media presence.

To fight the declining enrollment, the district needs to attract more families to move to the area. Overall Washington had an enrollment decline of 53 students this school year.

Dicks explains the projects in the district will help, especially the addition to Stewart Elementary. Families will be able to drop off all of their kids regardless of age at Stewart and then the students will take buses to the buildings they attend and the infant can go to the day care center run by the YMCA attached to Stewart.

He said they have seen quite a few open enrollments in the past couple of months. Forms can be picked up at central office or they can be downloaded from the Department of Education. For the full interview about open enrollment click here.
