Panthers Sweep Iowa Mennonite

The Iowa Mennonite boys and girls basketball teams were swept in a Southeast Iowa Superconference doubleheader Friday night in Packwood.

In the girls contest, No. 3 in class 2A Pekin began the game on a 28-0 run, holding IMS scoreless for the first 12:30 of the game rolling to a 65-20 win. The Panthers led 32-9 at the halftime break. Pekin also had a big run to begin the second half, outscoring IMS 28-4 in the first nine minutes out of the locker room. The Panthers forced 28 turnovers and enacted a continuous clock with 90 seconds left in the third quarter.

Suzanna Yoder led IMS with 11 points. With the loss Iowa Mennonite falls to 0-16 on the season.

Pekin finished the sweep by knocking off the Iowa Mennonite boys 60-53. The Panthers started hot in the nightcap as well, going on a 19-6 run that lasted the entire first quarter. IMS would find traction in the second period behind their press and 10 points in the frame from Nick Yutzy. After cutting the deficit to four, a Brady Donovan three point goal at the buzzer put IMS down seven going into the half. Out of the break Pekin built their lead to as many as 14 points. Late in the game IMS would make a push and the cut the deficit to five but Pekin was able to get defensive stops and knock down their free throws to salt away the win.

Nick Yutzy led IMS with a game high 23 points. Eli Gingerich added 13. With the loss IMS is now 9-8 on the season.
