The Kalona City Council unanimously approved one item in a special session held Monday night. A special election for Kalona residents will be held on March 1st to determine whether or not $3.9 million in bonds will be issued for a community center. If approved the funds will be used for demolishing the existing gymnasium, and designing, constructing, equipping and furnishing the building. The full renovation will add about 18,000 square feet according to City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh. He requested a letter of support from the Washington County Board of Supervisors for the project. The supervisors tabled the action Tuesday morning in their regular meeting. For the bond to pass, 60% of voters must say yes on the ballot.
