Iowa’s influenza activity is now regional and the Iowa Department of Public Health says flu activity is increasing in the state. The three strains of flu circulating in Iowa are two types of A and one of B, which are covered by this year’s vaccines. IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk states there is still time to get a vaccine, as the flu season peaks in late January or February. So far there have been four influenza-related deaths in Iowa this season. There are medications a doctor can prescribe to make the flu shorter and reduce the risk of hospitalization or death.
