Several regional wrestlers desended on Solon High School Saturday for the Ed Hadenfeldt Wrestling Invitational. Fourteen Washington Demon wrestlers competed against grapplers from 12  schools, including Albia, Center Point-Urbana, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Clear Creek-Amana, Iowa Valley, Lisbon, North Cedar, Solon, Wapello, West Branch, West Liberty, and Vinton-Shellsburg.

Two Demon wrestlers took first place in their weight divisions. Juniors Trey Van Weelden (152) and Karlton Skubal (182) left the mat as champions. Van Weelden grinded out a 4-3 decision over Lisbon’s Hunter Robinson in the first place match at 152 pounds. Skubal recorded a first round pin in his championship match over North Cedar Brendan Sander.

Junior Kyle Anderson (132) , the No. 6 wrestler in Class 2A’s 132 pound weight class, battled himself into the first place match. Center Point-Urbana’s Brock Rathbun pinned Anderson 1:05 into their championship match.

Sophomore Mitchell Huisenga (285) also worked his way into the championship match of the heavyweight class. Huisenga lost the  bout with Albia’s Carter Isley in 10 seconds.

The Demon wrestlers will spend the week practicing for this Saturday’s East Marshall Wrestling tournament. First grapples are set for 10 a.m. at East Marshall High School.
