Special elections are less than a week away. Citizens of Ainsworth and Kalona will go to the polls Tuesday. Ainsworth will fill a seat on the city council. Three have filed papers to run in the election Douglas D. Donald, Dawn H. Stewart and Michael Eugene Sypherd, Sr. On election day polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. at the Ainsworth Fire Station.

Kalona will vote on whether or not $3.9 million in bonds will be issued for an addition to the community center. The project would add about 18,000 square feet of space to the current center. Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. on March 1st at the Kalona Community Center. For the bond to pass, 60% of voters must say yes on the ballot.

Sue Meeks, elections administrator for Washington County, said there is still time to vote early in both elections. Early in person voting will continue at the court house until 11 a.m. Tuesday. Those who would like an absentee ballot may request one until Friday but it must be filled out and posted marked by Monday in order to count. Meeks says so far 10 have voted early for the Kalona bond issue and nine for the Ainsworth City Council. Meeks adds she expects a large turnout in the Kalona election.
