Almost 14% of Americans read at a fifth grade level or below, and about 43% of those people live in poverty and there is a free program in Washington County aimed at helping adults improve reading skills. Dr. Monie Hayes at the Kirkwood Washington Regional Center explains the adult literacy program pairs up a student and a volunteer to work on achieving individual goals in reading or computer proficiency. She explains they are looking for more people to help and more people to volunteer as weekly tutors.

The tutors don’t need special training or a degree, simply the desire to help others learn. Hayes adds the program is often working with native English speakers but is open to any adults in Washington County looking to improve their skills. For more information listen to today’s Washington Page.
