The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk wrestling team faced off with five other schools Saturday afternoon at Mediapolis High School in class 2A sectional action.

The Golden Hawks finished fifth in the team race with their score of 118 points. The Washington Demons were the sectional champions with their score of 239 points. Four Golden Hawks advanced to the district meet with their performance on Saturday. Mid-Prairie crowned one sectional champion on the day as Levi Duwa topped the podium at 220lbs. After a bye in the first round Duwa pinned Kyle Giese of Columbus in the second period and then beat Gage Jarrett of West Burlington Notre Dame by a 6-1 decision.

The Golden Hawks had three runners-up at the event including Duncan McCain at 113lbs. After a first round bye McCain beat Walker Ikerd of Washington by a 9-4 decision. McCain then matched up with Josh Keller of Columbus. Both wrestlers entered the match with unbeaten records on the year. Keller knocked off McCain by a 9-5 score, but McCain advanced through without a wrestleback.

At 170lbs Cameron Tolander of Mid-Prairie qualified for districts as a sectional runner-up. Tolander got a bye in the first round, and then beat Bryce Rickey of Washington 4-1 to advance to the title match. In the championship bout Tolander fell to Tucker Morrison of Columbus 4-1 but advanced through to districts without a wrestleback.

At 195lbs Visouth Peterschmidt of Mid-Prairie qualified for districts as a sectional runner-up. Peterschmidt received a bye in the first round and then got by Michael Fritz of Fairfield by a 12-11 decision. It was a match that Peterschmidt trailed by four points with under 20 seconds left before he executed a throw while fighting off a single leg takedown to score a five point move and the victory. The title match was just as exciting with Peterschmidt squaring off against Ethan Timmerman. The match progressed through regulation and into overtime tied at one. After exhausting all of the overtimes, the bout was decided in Timmerman’s favor on criteria following ultimate tie breaking overtime.

All four Golden Hawks will be on the mat Saturday trying to earn a berth at the state tournament at the district meet at Clear Creek Amana High School. Action begins at noon.
