Another night of postseason basketball action takes place tonight in Lone Tree. The Lion boys’ basketball team (17-5 overall) hosts a pair of Class 1A District 8 semifinal games, battling the New London Tigers (12-10 overall) in the nightcap for a spot in Thursday’s district title game.

The Lions advanced past the quarterfinal round by defeating the Iowa Mennonite School (12-11 overall) for a third time this season, 50-43, at Lone Tree High School last Thursday. Junior guard Jovonte Squires poured in a game-high 26 points, dishing out five assists, and swiping five steals, while junior Niko Gosnell added 10 points and seven rebounds in the victory. The win snapped back-to-back losses for the Lions entering postseason play.

The Tigers aren’t strangers to the competition inside the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North. Tonight marks their seventh game versus a North Division opponent this season, winning three of the previous six matchups. Their latest victory came in the Class 1A District 8 quarterfinal round where the Tigers upended the Highland Huskies, 64-45, Thursday in Lone Tree. Freshman Mason Porter leads the Tigers in scoring with 324 points, and his 187 rebounds secured are the most on the squad as well.

KCII Sports will have live play-by-play coverage of the Class 1A District 8 semifinal between the Lions and the Tigers beginning with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 7:30 p.m. on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIRadio.com.
