A third quarter run played a pivotal role in ending the Lone Tree Lions boys’ basketball season (18-6 overall) Thursday night. As heard on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIRadio.com, the Lions traveled to West Burlington for the Class 1A District 8 championship game versus the No. 2 Danville Bears (23-1 overall).

After trailing by three points entering the third quarter, Danville outscored the Lions 21-9 in the eight minute stretch, propelling the Bears to a 67-56 victory. Balanced scoring helped Lone Tree stay close in the first half. Four Lions had seven or more first half points, attributing to the Lions’ 29-26 halftime advantage.

The team’s worst scoring quarter of the postseason saw Danville take the lead for good, holding a 47-38 advantage after three quarters. The Bears edged the Lions, 20-18, in the final period, taking the district championship, 67-56.

Juniors Jovonte Squires and Ross Swinton each scored 14 points, while sophomore Brock Smith added nine off the bench.

The Lions’ boys’ basketball season ends with an 18-6 overall record. Lone Tree will lose Jared Hudson to graduation.
