The Southeast Conference’s biggest bowling meet of the season took place Saturday at Lebowksi’s Rock N Bowl. Washington’s bowling alley was the host of the 2016 league meet with the Demons competing against other bowlers from Fairfield, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant. Five Washington bowlers earned first or second team all conference honors for their performances, four on the boys’ team and one on the girls’ squad.

Junior Collin Zear overcame illness to finish as the bronze medalist in the meet, dropping 369 pins for a third place finish. Zear, last week’s Hedge Above Lawncare Athlete of the Week, earned second-team all conference honors as a sophomore. Three members of Washington’s boys’ team were featured on the second team all-conference squad, including freshman Riley Lambert (352), sophomore Bailey Curtis (338), and junior Kylan Gillette (328). The Demons finished with 2,547 points, the second best finish in the conference standings. The Keokuk Chiefs won the Southeast Conference boys’ title with 2,758.

Sophomore AnnaMarie Walter finished as the Demons’ lone all-conference bowler on the girls’ squad. Her score of 329 was seven pins shy of making it on the first team squad. Washington’s girls team bowled with three competitors in the league meet, finishing in fourth place with a score of 1,169.

Both Washington bowling teams will compete in the Class 1A District 5 state qualifying bowling meet tomorrow. The Demons will compete against bowlers from Centerville, Fairfield, Pella Christian, and Sigourney. First pins are set to drop at 1 p.m. at Excit-a-bowl in Pella.
