With sunny skies and warm temperatures it feels as though spring is just around the corner and horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advise now is the time to think about gardens. In regards to shrubs, pruning, or cutting or trimming branches of a plant, should often be done in early spring to restore health. They advise, March or early April is the best time to rejuvenate large, overgrown shrubs by pruning them. While on the other hand, the best time to prune healthy spring-flowering shrubs is immediately after flowering. In regards to narrow-leaved evergreen shrubs, like juniper and yew, prune in early April before growth begins. Summer-flowering shrubs like Japanese spirea and panicle hydrangea bloom in summer on the current year’s growth and can be pruned in late winter or early spring.
