One of the best golfers last season in the South Iowa Cedar League was Sigourney’s Kaden Benson. As a sophomore last spring, Benson finished third in the conference in nine hole average with 42.13 strokes and topped the league in 18 hole average with 77.67, a full four strokes better than the rest of the conference.

First year head golf coach Lee Crawford is a guest on this week’s PM Sports Page and says Benson has put in a lot of practice time this offseason, after finishing just shy of a state tournament appearance as an individual. Crawford said part of his offseason work included competing on the junior professional golf association tour this summer in Des Moines. He says Benson enters the season as the team’s top golfer.

Senior Jordan Albert also returns for the Savage boys’ golf team and is penciled in as the team’s number two golfer. He finished third on the team last season in nine hole (46.71) and 18 hole (91) averages.

Crawford is giving the early edge to freshman Dustin Haines as the team’s number three golfer, saying an injury suffered during last baseball season gave Haines extra time to practice his golf swing. Sophomore Tanner Halleran has assumed the number four spot early in the season for the Savages, and four or five newcomers are vying for the fifth and final varsity starting spot.

The Savages’ golf season debuts Monday, April 4, competing against the BGM Bears at the Sigourney Golf and Country Club.
