A Sigourney senior has decided to continue his football career at a community college powerhouse. Peyton Crawford has agreed to compete for a spot this fall on the Iowa Western Community College Reivers Football team as a safety prospect.

Sigourney/Keota head football coach Jared Jensen joined this week’s PM Sports Page to discuss Crawford’s college decision, saying he was torn between playing football and baseball in college. Jensen said a successful senior season on the gridiron filled with postseason accolades and attention from college programs swayed him in his decision to pick football over baseball.

Crawford was best known for his work on the offensive side of the football, ending his high school career as a first team running back selection. He finished this season with 1,747 rushing yards and found the endzone 25 times. He amassed 4,162 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns during his four years in the Cobras’ backfield.

Crawford’s accumulated 176.5 total tackles during high school, including 12 tackles for loss, five sacks and picked off five passes.

The IWCC Reivers football program has only been in existence since 2009, but has won 67 games and captured the 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association Football Championship. The Reivers finished the 2015 season with a 10-2 overall record, claiming the 2015 Graphic Edge Bowl title with a 20-6 victory over No. 17 Georgia Military Bulldogs (8-4 overall) last December.
