The first outdoor meet of the season rendered positive results for the Washington Demon girls’ track team. The Demons traveled to West Burlington to take part in the annual Falcon Relays, competing against athletes from Central Lee, Danville, Fairfield, Keokuk, Mediapolis, Mount Pleasant, New London, Pekin, Winfield-Mount Union, West Central, and West Burlington/Notre Dame. Washington finished in third place in the Class A team standings, earning 93 points.

In the field events, Demon senior McKayla Miller recorded her personal best throw in the shotput, hurling it 32′ 9″, the second best recorded throw in the meet. She came away with a fourth place finish in the discuss throw, flinging it 93′ 1″. Overall, Miller scored 12 points for the Demons.

Freshmen Jenah Greiner and Madelyn Janecek’s earned Washington points for their leaping abilities. Greiner vaulted herself 15 feet 1.25 inches for a third place finish in the long jump, while Janecek cleared 4 feet 8 inches in the high jump, the third best result. The two combined to score 12 points for Washington.

The relay portion was highlighted by the Demons’ 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle team, who took first place with a time of 1:12.97. The members of the team include: Carolan Hoffman, Makenzie Knutson, Jesse Buchholz, and Emma Wood, who scored the Demons 10 points.

Freshman Isabel Bailey took third place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:07.69. Senior Emma Wood came away with a third place finish in the 400 meter hurdles, clocking a time of 1:22.47. The two added a combined 12 points to the Demons’ team score.

Senior Emme Keith came away with fourth place in the 1500 meter run, crossing the finish line in 5:48.50. Keith’s result gave Washington an additional four team points.

Mount Pleasant won the overall team title in the Class A field, earning 163 points. Washington returns to competition Thursday, running in the Bullette Relays hosted by Mediapolis High School.
