Athletes from Southeast Iowa have been well represented on this year’s Cornell College Rams baseball team (3-3 overall). Rams baseball coach Seth Wing joined this week’s PM Sports Page to discuss his team’s recent six-game road trip in Florida.

Wing said the Washington Demons had great representation in his team’s first road trip of the year. Sophomore Walker Breard, a 2014 Demon graduate, came to the plate 22 times over the six game span. Wing said despite a .182 batting average, he was pleased with Breard’s early season power. Two of his four hits in Florida left the yard, including a seventh inning grand slam in a 18-5 win over the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets. Breard is the only Rams player to record a home run this season.

Wing continued attaching the word utility to describe senior infielder T.J. Rausch. The 2012 Washington grad started a pair of games at shortstop, one game third base, and was the designated hitter in another. In 12 at bats, Rausch posted a .250 batting average, accounting for two doubles, three runs scored, and a pair of runs driven in.

Senior Jared Henry is one of four Rams pitchers who left Florida without giving up a run. The 2012 Demon graduate faced 14 batters in 3.1 innings pitched in the Sunshine state, scatting four hits.

Another player Wing had high praise for was junior Andy Dodson. The 2013 Lone Tree graduate ranks second on the team in batting average, recording a hit in three of his five at bats during spring break, driving in a pair of runs. Dodson also took the mound for the Rams, allowing one run over seven innings in a 2-1 victory over the Iowa Weslyan Tigers (2-5 overall). In 7.2 innings pitched during spring break, Dodson recorded a 2.35 earned run average, allowing two runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out four batters.

The Rams resume their season today in Wheaton, Illinois for a neutral-site game against Saint Mary’s at 11 a.m. followed by a contest versus host school Wheaton at 2 p.m.
