The Mid-Prairie boys track and field team opened the season with a pleasant surprise Tuesday night at the Demon Relays at Case Field in Washington.

The Golden Hawks took home the team title in the class B school division with an overall score of 131 points, edging second place Mediapolis who finished with 121 points. Highlights for the Golden Hawks on the night came in the 800 and 1600 where Mid-Prairie went one and two in each event. In the 800 it was Ryan Errthum with the win in 2:10.76 followed by teammate Luke Sigler in second at 2:10.90. In the 1600 Sigler took the title in 4:55.33 with teammate Andrew Schwartz second in 4:57.99. Floyd Evans was a champion for the Golden Hawks in the 3200 with a time of 10:35.37.

Mid-Prairie took two relay titles, winning the 4×200 in 1:39.96 with a team of Quinn Schmidt, Keaton Duwa, Marshal Teets and Cary Schaefer. The Golden Hawk distance medley was also the fastest, winning the event in 3:50.02 with a team of Jackson Young, Keaton Duwa, Cary Schaefer and Peyton Miller. In the field events Marshal Teets was the champion of the high jump, clearing 5’8″. Levi Duwa was twice a champion, winning the shot put with a throw of 50’9.50″. Duwa also claimed the discus throw title with a toss of 159’6″, smashing the previous Mid-Prairie record by more than six feet.

The Mid-Prairie boys track and field team will next be in action March, 31st when they travel to Mount Pleasant.
