There’s plenty of experience returning this spring for the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves boys’ track team. W-MU head track coach Brad Doerring previewed the Wolves season on last Saturday’s JET Physical Therapy Radio Coaches Corner, stating he has four athletes back who qualified for the state track meet last season.

Doerring was very complimentary of senior Garrett Baker, praising him for preserving through the sport after not enjoying it earlier in his high school career. Baker’s junior season was notable after he qualified for the state track meet in the 200 meter dash and as a member of the Wolves’ 4×200 meter relay. He left Des Moines with a medal in the 200 meter dash, clocking a time of 23.28, the sixth fastest in Class 1A.

The Wolves bring back a pair of distance runners who placed in the top 10 in last year’s state meet. Junior Gavin Bence qualified for both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. His one-mile time of 4:39.4 was the ninth fastest in the Class 1A field, while his two-mile performance was clocked at 10:13, the seventh best finish. Senior Johnathon Quinn joined Bence in the 3200 meter run, clocking the ninth best time of 10:22. Both runners competed in the Class 1A state cross country meet last October in Fort Dodge. Bence came in 17th place, running a time of 17:17. Quinn finished his high school cross country career as the 25th best performance in the field, clocking a time of 17:32.

Senior Zach Davis highlights the Wolves’ returners in the field events. He qualified for the state long jump competition as a junior, tying for 10th place with a leap of 20 feet 0.75 inches.

The Wolves’ first track meet is scheduled for March 28, competing in the Falcon Relays at West Burlington High School.
