A free one-on-one tutoring program in Washington County looks to improve reading, math or computer skills on an individual basis. Coordinator of the Kirkwood Adult Literacy Program, Monie Hayes, shares it benefits people from a variety of backgrounds. She says it is for every age level and educational experience; more than 25% of adult Americans don’t read above an eighth grade reading level whether or not they’ve completed the eighth grade.

The free program partners a volunteer tutor with someone looking to better their skills and they meet once or twice each week to work for about an hour.

This week a n open house is being held for current volunteer tutors and for those who want to become tutors. It will be held at the Kirkwood Washington Regional Center at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the second floor conference room. For the full interview with Hayes listen to today’s Washington Page.
