A fifth grader at Lincoln Elementary School scored the state’s highest archery achievement this weekend in Des Moines. The 2016 Iowa National Archery in the Schools Program’s state shoot was Saturday on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, and students from all three Washington squads shot in the event.

Highlighting this weekend’s results was Washington fifth grader Allison Rees, who topped the 144-person elementary girls field with a score of 279. The mark was her career best score, recording 13 bullseyes in her state championship performance. This is her sixth first place finish this season, and she has placed in the top four of all 10 meets she competed in.

Rees’ classmate, Curtis Stender, also placed well on the state’s biggest stage. His score of 272 gave him the fourth highest score among the 213 person elementary boys field. Both Rees and Stender have qualified for the national shoot in Louisville, KY, with a top 10 individual finish. The entire Lincoln Elementary squad placed fifth out of 15 teams with a score of 2,939.

The high schoolers posted a score of 3,279, the ninth best finish among the 19-team field. Senior Jade Wells score a school-best score of 282 on Saturday, placing her 16th out of 190 high school girls participating. Freshman Griffin Wood has the high school Demon boys’ top marks, tallying a 279, the 45th best score in the high school boys competition.

The middle schoolers saved their best performance for the state shoot, marking a 3,176 as a team. Their score was the 10th best among the 15 team field. Eighth grader Samantha Mellinger scored a 280, the 12th best middle school girl score. Sixth grader Lane Frana was the 33rd best competitor in the middle school boys group, shooting a 276.

Based on their scores, all three Washington archery teams have qualified for the national shoot in Louisville, KY. The coaches will send one team to represent all three squads with the members of the team still to be determined.  Below are a list of Washington’s archery students who shot at this weekend’s state shoot in Des Moines.
