April is National Autism Awareness Month. Traci Zahradnek, special education teacher at Mid-Prairie, tells KCII News that autism is a developmental disability where people might have a wide range of difficulties communicating with others. She says that there are many misperceptions about autism, including ideas that people with autism have an intellectual disability and can’t go to college or hold good jobs, when many can. She says when trying to communicate with people with more severe autism, be patient, and take the lead from family or other people who communicate regularly with the person and who care about them.
