Three events at this week’s Drake Relays competition will include athletes from the Columbus Wildcat boys’ and girls’ track squads. Columbus qualified for the boys’ 100 meter dash, the boys’ 4×100 meter relay, and girls’ long jump competition during last Thursday’s Winfield-Mount Union Invitational.

Senior Mauricio Ramirez is competing in two events for the Wildcats at the blue oval in Des Moines. Ramirez qualified as an individual in the 100 meter dash, clocking his best time of the season at 11.06 seconds. His time ranks him in a tie for 21st overall in the entire state. The Drake Relays takes the top 32 sprinters in the state for their 100 meter dash. The preliminary races of the 100 meter dash will be held at 8:16 a.m. Friday.

Ramirez will be joined by Ruben Paz, Devon Henry, and Abel Mena in Des Moines as the crew will run in the preliminary heat of the 4×100 meter relay. The foursome clocked their fastest time of the spring at 44.91 seconds, ranking them 72nd in the state. The top 80 times are invited to take part in the Drake Relays. The race is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.

Finally, junior Shania Boyd saved her best jump of the year for the final day of qualification. Boyd vaulted herself 17’1.5″ last Thursday, giving her the 17th best jump in the state. The top 24 leaps recorded are invited to compete in the Drake Relays. The girls’ long jump competition is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
