The defending Class 4A girls’ state golf champions opened their title defense with a strong statement Thursday in Keokuk. The Washington Demons began the new year at the Elks Fairview Golf Course, competing in an 18-hole Par 74 tournament versus teams from Burlington, Mount Pleasant, Fairfield, and Keokuk. The Demons carded the lowest team score at 344, winning the tournament by 19 strokes.

Sophomore Sarah Nacos, last year’s Class 4A individual state golf champion, opened her second varsity season with a score of three under 71 to take medalist honors. Nacos earned medalist honors in each meet she competed in as a freshman.

Senior Deanna Peiffer came away with the second lowest score of the tournament, carding an eight over 82 during the event. Sophomore Megan Strabala recorded an 18 hole round of 94, placing third on the Demons’ squad. Senior Brenna Burlingame was three shots behind Strabala to finish fourth on the squad.

The Washington Demon girls’ golf team returns to competition Tuesday, battling the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks and Columbus Wildcats in a non-conference triangular at the Kalona Golf Course.
