Wet weather stayed away from Case Field for much of Thursday evening, allowing the Demon girls’ track team to host the 42nd annual Washington Invite. Washington hosted athletes from Benton, Clear Creek Amana, Eddyville-Blakesburg, Fort Madison, and Mount Pleasant. The Demons had top two finishes in nine events, taking second place in the team competition with 119 points.

Washington won two event titles, the 400 meter hurdles and the 4×100 meter relay. Makenzie Knutson hurdled her way one time around the track in 1:13.65. The relay team of Makenzi Marek, Jenah Greiner, Amber Salow, and Kelly Wheeler completed one lap around the track in 52 seconds, edging the field by one-tenth of a second. Marek finished in a tie for first place in the high jump, clearing 4’10”.

The Demons had six second place finishes on the evening. Wheeler clocked the 100 meter dash in 13.15 seconds. Isabel Bailey crossed the finish line in 28.69 seconds in the 200 meter dash. Ashley Telleen ran the 400 meter dash in 1:04.99. The 4×800 meter relay crew of Molly Sparks, Meredith Raber, Telleen, and Madelyn Janecek  recorded a time of 11:02.35. The 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle team of Carolan Hoffmann, Knutson, Jessie Buchholz, and Emma Wood completed the event in 1:10.51. Rounding out the second place finishes was Bailey in the long jump, vaulting herself 14’10”.

Washington now waits to see if they have qualified any events for next weekend’s Drake Relays in Des Moines. Those who don’t made the cut will compete next Thursday in a meet hosted by the WACO girls’ track team.
