A cool Thursday night in Wayland, the Washington Demon girls’ track team came away with the most team points at the annual Ekstrand Relays. The Demons shared the track with teams from Danville, Highland, the Iowa Mennonite School, HLV, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, New London, Sigourney, West Branch, Wilton and Winfield-Mount Union. Washington won the Class A title, scoring 151 points, 22 more than any other team competing regardless of class.

Washington left Wayland with three event championships, two relays and the 800 meter run. The distance medley squad of Makenzi Marek, Makenzie Knutson, Ashley Teeleen, and Claire Horak crossed the finish line in 4:55.36, 10 seconds faster than the field. The 4×100 meter relay crew of Marek, Jenah Greiner, Amber Salow, and Kelly Wheeler finished one lap around the trackin 52.5 seconds, edging the other teams by nearly four-tenths of a second. Two Demons finished in the top two of the 800 meter run. Meredith Raber clocked the fastest half-mile run at 2:44.00, nearly six seconds better than her teammate Molly Sparks.

The Washington Demon boys’ track teams had two relay teams take home event championships Thursday night. The 4×100 meter relay group of Jack Giardino, Bryce Rickey, Ethan Hansen, and Jose Tapia edged the field by three-100ths of a second, winning the race with a time of 46.07 seconds. The 4×200 meter relay crew of Hansen, Rickey, Kyle Schindler, and Tapia clocked a time of 1:37.21, besting the field by over one-tenth of a second. The Demon boys’ track team earned 96 team points, the fourth most in the Class A field.
