After a rough outing on Thursday against the Fairfield Trojans, the Washington Demon soccer teams step out of conference tonight. Washington will make the trek to Des Moines County for a non-conference battle against Mediapolis. Both Demon soccer teams will try to bounce back from 9-0 losses to the Trojans.

Seven of Fairfield’s nine goals in the boys’ contest were scored in the second half, five with less than 16 minutes remaining. Washington’s boys’ soccer team (1-3 overall; 0-1 Southeast) has a pair of second year players leading the team in important statistical categories. Sophomore Anthony Torres currently leads Washington in goals score with three and has recorded the team’s lone assist. Sophomore Thomas Zimmer is averaging over 14 saves per game this season, stopping a team-high 57 shots. The Demons won last year’s meeting versus the Bulldogs, 6-0, in Washington.

Washington’s girls’ soccer team (0-4 overall; 0-1 Southeast) is in search of their first win this spring. The Demons were outscored 18-1 in games against Mid-Prairie and Fairfield last week. Washington’s two goals scored this season came off the feet of senior Kristen Barber and junior Jessie Buchholz. The Demons prevailed in last year’s meeting against the Bullettes, 3-2, in Washington.

The non-conference doubleheader begins with the girls’ contest at 4 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow at Mediapolis High School.
