Currently Washington County pays $1,800 annually for Hazardous Materials services from Muscatine Fire Department, but the department is asking for an increase in that fee. Larry Smith, Washington and Keokuk Counties Emergency Management Coordinator, explained at this week’s Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting that the fee has been the same $1,800 for at least 11 years. The requested increase is 25 cents per capita for a total cost of $5,503.75. The 25 cent rate is a quarter of what Des Moines County pays for their hazmat services. Smith said it’s expensive and the crew members have to have annual physicals. The proposed 28E agreement revision was tabled until county attorney Shawn Showers could review it.
