April is Distracted Driving Awareness month.

This April the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau has put together a campaign to highlight this issue. In 2014, there were 322 fatalities on Iowa roadways. Four of those were related to distracted driving while another 324 injuries from distracted driving accidents were reported. Officials believe that distracted driving related fatalities are greatly under-reported and that the true number is closer to 64% of all crashes. Distracted driving can include anything from cell phones, texting, electronic devices and other things that take your attention away from driving. Texting while driving makes someone six times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and it’s the leading cause of death among teenagers.
