One hundred minutes of play wasn’t enough to decide the latest installment of the Washington, Mid-Prairie rivalry on the pitch.The boys’ soccer teams squared off at Washington High School Tuesday evening in a non-conference showdown for county bragging rights. The physical contest ended in sudden death penalty kicks as dusk approached with Mid-Prairie edging the Demons 6-5, for an official final score of 2-1 .

After 80 minutes of regulation, the score was tied at 1-1. Washington scored their only regulation goal in third minute of the game with the Demons drawing a foul in the Golden Hawks’ penalty box. Freshman Matteo Hernandez sent the free kick past Mid-Prairie goalie Nathan Reed, giving the Demons a 1-0 advantage. The score would stay intact heading into intermission. Mid Prairie opened the second half with the equalizer, a Terrhyn Jacoby goal 20 seconds into the half to knot the game at 1-1. The game stayed tied at the end of regulation and past the two 10 minute overtime periods.

The game entered the penalty kick phase of overtime and each team scored four goals with their first five attempts. The game was decided in the seventh penalty kick when Washington’s shot went right into the chest of Reed. Prior to the save, Golden Hawk senior Noah Altenhofen fired his shot into the bottom left corner, giving Mid-Prairie a 6-5 advantage. The victory was the first of the season for the Golden Hawks, who improve their record to 1-2 overall. The loss drops Washington’s record to 1-2.

Both teams return to the field Thursday. Washington begins Southeast Conference competition at home hosting the Fairfield Trojans (1-1 overall). Mid-Prairie opens River Valley Conference action in Wellman against Iowa City Regina (2-0 overall).
